So you’ve booked a baby milestone session—woohoo! Whether we’re capturing big baby grins, wobbly sits, or that baby skootch, this session is all about capturing the sweet little moments that make this stage so special. But before you walk through my studio doors, here’s what you need to know to make the most of it.

1. Timing is Everything

Think about your baby’s daily schedule—are they happiest first thing in the morning? Or after their morning nap? Avoid replacing nap time with a car ride. I recommend sticking with their usual nap at home, then heading to the studio. Sessions are typically scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and usually last 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on how baby’s doing.

2. What to Wear

Dress your baby in something comfy and easy to remove when you arrive—save their photo outfit for the session itself. I have a client wardrobe in most sizes, and we usually do 2–3 outfit changes, so feel free to mix your favorites with mine or just go with mine.

If you love neutrals, soft tones always photograph beautifully. Prefer bold colors? Let’s go for it—red is my favorite! I love a good monochrome setup! Whatever you choose, or a bit of both. I’ve got a variety of backdrops and colors to match your style.

You don’t NEED to bring any outfits for the baby milestone session you could use my studio wardrobe for every set. But if you want to purchase something specific, special, or if you just love an excuse to shop! here are a few of my favorite stores for baby photo sessions.

  • Bows Boutique – This is a local boutique in Lincolnwood, if you love to shop in person this is your spot.
  • Rylee + Crew – So many pretty things! Be sure to check their sister brand too Noralee.
  • H&M – I suggest online as the most store dont have a huge kid selection. But online offers a lot of cute things.
  • Zara – lots of cute things
  • Jamie Kay – This is one of my favorites, be sure to check the sales section!
  • Amazon – Not my favorite but if you are looking for something last minute it does the job.
  • Newborn Nerds – Last but definitely not least is the nerds, this is a photography brand that sells outfits that exactly match many of the backdrops I have. If you are looking for a true monochromatic set up this is where you need to look! Be sure to check with me if you want a specific color match to make sure I own that backdrop or can get it in time.

Feel free to send me photos while you’re shopping for your baby milestone session— if you’ve already purchased anything, or plan to please be sure to send me a picture a few days ahead of time so I can plan accordingly. If you’re a new client, we’ll have you come in for a consultation before your session so we can talk through everything in person. If you’re a returning client who did not to do a full consult this time, we can always set something up or hop on a quick call.

3. What to Pack

  • Favorite toy or noisemaker (for smiles and attention)
    • Avoid bringing anything you don’t want photographed. Once your baby sees it, it’s hard to take away. As a last resort, something familiar can help if needed.
  • Pacifier (even if they rarely use one—it helps!)
  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • Backup outfit (for both baby and you)
  • Low-mess snacks or bottle (we can pause for snack breaks between outfits if needed)

4. Family Photos During Your Baby Milestone Session

I always ask if you’d like to include some family photos at any milestone session—they’re included! If you choose to, we’ll do them first while everyone’s fresh. It’s a great way to capture connection.

– Please don’t bring extra people who won’t be in the photos. Too many people can overwhelm your baby, and the studio space is limited. If we’re including older siblings, we may have one parent take them out after their part is done to help keep things calm.

5. Baby Mug Shots Are a Must

Every milestone session includes Mug Shots—those simple, close-up personality portraits in black and white on a solid background. They’re a great way to track growth and a favorite among families. Plenty of clients return just for updated mug shots even after baby turns one.

6. Styling and Incorporating Past Baby Milestone Sessions

If you’re doing a milestone package, we’ll incorporate details from previous sessions—whether it’s a color scheme, prop, or theme. We’ll plan with you to keep everything cohesive and beautiful.

7. Parent Involvement

You’ll be involved throughout the session—your baby knows you best! Whether helping me get smiles or spotting while they sit, your role is important. I’ll guide you on when to jump in and when to relax.

8. Stranger Anxiety

Babies as young as 3 months can get uneasy around strangers. When you arrive, I’ll take a few minutes to gauge how your baby responds. Some warm up fast, others need a little playtime to adjust—and that’s totally fine. Their comfort always comes first.

9. Illness & Reschedules

If your baby has been sick or showing symptoms in the 48 hours before your session, please let me know so we can reschedule. It’s important to protect all families (especially those with newborns), and I want your baby to feel their best. I’m flexible with weekday reschedules, and if baby isn’t having it that day, we’ll pause and try again another time.

10. Fun Bonus

AND If you love a good theme I am alway down to do something fun!

When should I book my baby milestone session?

It’s best to book a few months in advance so we can aim for the baby milestone itself—not after it’s passed.

If you haven’t booked your milestone session with me yet and you’re ready to, visit my website or contact me so we can chat all about it!

Baby milestone sessions are all about celebrating your baby just as they are right now. These stages fly by—and I’m here to help you remember them.
