If you’ve landed here, you’re probably a few weeks out from your due date, googling how much does newborn photography Cost at 11pm while your partner is asleep. You’ve seen prices that go from free to $3,000 and you genuinely don’t know what’s normal – or what the difference actually is.
I’m going to be really honest with you, because I think that’s more useful than a sales pitch.

This is where it gets confusing, and honestly, the industry makes it hard on purpose. Some photographers quote you a session fee and that’s it. Others include everything. Others include almost nothing and charge you for everything after. You really have to read carefully to figure out how much does newborn photography cost with that photographer.
Here’s what I think should be part of any newborn photography experience worth paying for:
Many parents end up with all their photos sitting on a hard drive or buried in their phone and they never look at them again. I want to make sure that doesn’t happen to you.

Here’s what different price points honestly look like in the Chicago and North Shore area:
This is usually someone just starting out, or a friend with a nice camera. The price is low because they’re learning, and essentially asking to practice on you. You might get something great. You also might get unedited photos, inconsistent posing, bad lighting. This is also the tier where photographers sometimes lose files or miss deadlines. I’ve had clients come to me after exactly that experience.
A step up, but usually still a “show up and get photos” situation. You’ll fill out a form, come in, get your pictures taken, and get a gallery link. And then it’s on you to figure out what to do with them. There’s no one guiding the process or helping you think through what you actually want at the end of it.
The photos will look good here. More polished, more consistent. But it’s often still pretty transactional. You’re not getting someone who really knows your family or walks you through everything. Products and wall art may come up, or they may not.
This is where everything changes. You’re not just hiring a photographer. You’re handing off the whole thing to someone who thinks of everything, handles everything, and makes sure you end up with something that actually lives in your home. Not in a folder somewhere. This is the full-service boutique experience.

Every full-service photographer prices a little differently, and there’s a real reason for that – what you walk away with depends entirely on what your family wants. Here’s how it works with me.
My session fee for newborns is $350, and that includes your consultation and your reveal appointment. Print products start at $190 and collections start at $990. Most of my clients invest around $2,500 total.
What they walk away with, an album, wall art, a collection box, are things their kids will actually touch one day. Things that live on a shelf or a wall, not in a camera roll. And everything you get physically, you also get as a digital file. So you have both
I want to tell you about a client who came to me after a really bad experience. She had hired someone who seemed totally fine. Friendly, affordable, no red flags. And then weeks went by with no gallery. When she finally followed up, the photographer admitted she had lost the photos. All of them.
If she had walked away with something physical, an album, even one print, that couldn’t have happened. The photos would have existed in the world.
That’s an extreme case. But the quieter version of this happens constantly. A new mom gets her gallery link, fully intends to print something, and then she’s back at work and sleep deprived and the overwhelm of picking and ordering just feels like too much. So it sits there. Months go by. The moment passes.
Most people fully intend to print their photos. According to the Professional Photographers of America, 67% of people store their images solely on a phone or computer and more than half never print anything at all. It’s not that they don’t care. Life just gets in the way
I’ve had so many clients come to me after other photographers. Not because anything went wrong, but because they just never did anything with their photos. They didn’t know what to do with them and no one helped them figure it out.
I grew up without a lot of photos of myself. I know what it feels like as a kid to wonder if those moments happened, if they even mattered. That’s a big part of why I do this.

If you’re looking at more than one photographer, here’s what I’d pay attention to:
Do they ask you anything about yourself? Before your session, does anyone want to know about your family, what’s important to you, what you’re hoping for? Or does it feel like filling out a form and showing up?
Does their portfolio hold up across a lot of work? A few beautiful shots doesn’t tell you much. You want to see consistency across many different sessions and families. That’s how you know it’s not just luck.
What are their reviews actually saying? Not just “the photos are beautiful.” Do people mention how the experience felt? When someone says “I didn’t have to think about a single thing” or “she made it so easy,” that’s what you’re looking for.
What happens after you get your photos? This is the question most people forget to ask. Does the photographer help you figure out what to do with them? Or does a download link show up in your inbox and that’s the last you hear?
If you want to go deeper on any of this, I have a full guide on how to choose the right newborn photographer and a list of questions worth asking before you book.

I know $2,500 is a real number. I’m not going to pretend it isn’t.
But I want you to think about this for a second. How much did you spend on your baby’s nursery? How much are you spending on things your child will use for six months and outgrow? This is the one thing you genuinely cannot recreate. Your baby will not be this size again. This specific version of your family, right now, in these first weeks, won’t come back.
The families I think about most are the ones who went through an IVF journey, or pregnancy loss, or years of trying to get here. And then they don’t document this arrival the way it deserves because it feels like too much money. These are exactly the moments that need to be held onto the most.
You deserve to have something beautiful and real and lasting. Not a folder of files you’ll get to someday.
Nothing is committed to. We just talk. I want to hear about your family, what you’re hoping for, what feels important. From there we figure out together if we’re a good fit and what would work for you.
There’s no pressure at all. I love helping people think through this, even if that conversation just helps you know what questions to ask someone else.
Just reach out schedule a call. I’m right here to answer all you photography cost questions.
